Teach Me

ClassroomVicki was a schoolteacher for seventeen years, prior to becoming a realtor.  She loved children, and she loved teaching.  Actually, Vicki never stopped being a teacher – schoolteacher, Bible teacher, life teacher.  She was an incredibly gifted teacher. She truly had a God-given talent to teach.  I have heard it said, “The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book.”  Vicki was definitely one of the best.

In a classroom setting, all students have the same books, the same resources, and the teacher gives the same information to all students, however, all students do not learn the same things.  A teacher may do their best, but the student must have a desire to learn, and it is up to the student to apply the information that is presented.

As good as a teacher may be, they cannot make you learn and all students in a class will not learn the same things.  To learn, you must be willing to be taught.

Just as the first grade prepares us for the second grade, and the second grade prepares us for the third, and so on, I am convinced that everything we go through in life is to prepare us for the next step we are to take.

Life is a series of lessons, but we have a choice to learn, or not to learn.

In high school and college there are mandatory classes and elective classes.  The elective classes can be tried for a few days and then dropped if a person chooses.  Many of our lessons in life are elective, and when it gets too difficult, we make a choice to drop that class and move to something easier.  Because it may be our choice, we, oftentimes, miss the lesson that God would like to teach us.

Life lessons can be difficult.  Just so you know, the process I’m currently walking through is not my favorite.  It’s, undoubtedly, the hardest thing I’ve ever walked through and I’ve never been more challenged, but I have determined to learn everything I can during this time.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”  (Luke 11:1)

Several times throughout the Bible we find the words, “teach me.”  In Psalm 25, David tells the Lord to “teach me,” numerous times.  Two of my favorite verses of this chapter are verses 4 and 5: “Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths.  Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.”

This has become a part of my daily prayer:
Show me Your ways.
Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth.
And, teach me.

As difficult as it is, I’m asking God to help me learn everything He wants me to, not just for me, but also, for others, that I may be in a position to help.

In the past, I feel I’ve had some life lessons that God was trying to teach me something, but because it was too tough, I dropped the class before I learned what He wanted to teach me.

Perhaps you are encountering a difficult life lesson, and you’re looking to escape, looking for an opportunity to quit.  Before you completely drop this class, I urge you to ask God if there’s something that He wants to teach you.  Just because it’s difficult, does not mean that you can’t learn in the process, but you must have a desire to be taught and to learn.

The world will always give you the opportunity to quit, but only the world would call quitting an opportunity!

It’s always easier to jump and run, but what can we learn if we stay until it’s done?

Still Believing!

  1. Ray,
I shared a portion of your “Teach Me’ blog with my son, Ben. Today he shared with me about an issue he was going though and I found your words might help him stay the course.
I would add, sometimes we mortal humans, prefer to take the path of least resistance. However, I have learned that one cannot get through an uncomfortable time, until we do go through the other side to life’s lessons.
I will continue to read your blog posts, as it has given me a venue to continue believing God is in control of my life, if I trust and obey.
    Thanks Ray.
